Like most mammals, and especially rodents, hamsters are both inquisitive and intelligent. To remain healthy and happy, they need to be both mentally and physically exercised on a daily basis. A hamster left in a barren cage with nothing more than food and water will become bored, depressed, and may even fall ill. That is why it is extremely important, especially if you only have a single hamster, to keep a ready supply of hamster toys on hand to keep your fluffy little friend occupied. Due to the popularity of keeping pet hamsters and other small rodents, a wide variety of special made, sometimes hamster specific toys have been made.

What are Hamster Toys?

Hamster toys are a bit hard to define as one specific group of objects. In general, a hamster toy can be any object a hamster chooses to play with. But when most people think of hamster toys, they will probably imagine the classic hamster ball or perhaps the hamster wheel. However, pet supply manufacturers understand people's want to entertain their hamsters, so many more varieties of hamster toys are available beyond those two classics.

Different Toys for Hamsters

Since hamster toys now come in such a wide variety of styles ,figuring out what they are all for and choosing the right one can be challenging. Some hamster toys are even made for certain specific breeds of hamster. it's important to know what each hamster toy is for and what it's function is before placing it in your hamster's home. Here' s a short list of some of the more common varieties of hamster toy:

  • Hamster Balls are a very entertaining form of hamster toy, both for the hamster and it's owner. A hamster ball is a hard plastic ball with ventilation holes so that fresh air can pass through it. Most models feature a small opening so that the hamster can be placed inside, while others simply twist in half. The hamster ball allows your pet hamster to run freely about the house in almost complete safety, due to being enclosed in a plastic bubble. The hamster moves about by simply running forward, causing the ball to roll in the desired direction.
  • Hamster wheels function in much the same way as the hamster ball, but are fixed in a set location. A hamster wheels consist of a round chamber fixed to a central axle with a frame that keeps it off the ground. The hamster simply enters the wheel and begins to run in a fixed spot. Both hamster wheels and hamster wheels and hamster balls are great for giving your pet hamsters exercise, but the hamster wheel can be used within a hamster cage.
  • Hamster Chew Toys are very important to have in any hamster's home. Like all rodents, hamsters need to wear their front teeth down to keep them healthy and sharp. hamster chew toys provide the double use of a toy as well as a handy tooth grinding object. Most hamster chew toys are made from wood or other non toxic, natural materials. Many homemade hamster toys are chew toys.
  • Hamster Homes are a special kind of hamster toy that also doubles as a sleeping area. hamster homes can be placed within your hamster's cage to provide both a fun place to play and explore during waking hours, as well as an enclosed, secluded place to sleep. It is recommended to have some sort of hamster home inside your hamster's cage to provide a natural place to sleep.

What ever hamster toys you pick, make sure they are the right size for your hamster's cage. Having toys that are too large, or having too many toys, could have your hamster feeling crowded and stressed. Also, keep an eye on the condition of your hamster's toys, removing any that have become too damaged or soiled. Remember, a hamster toy isn't doing it's job if it's being a detriment to your hamster, and not a benefit.
